So you have a website and it looks really great. You love it and it reflects your brand and what your business does perfectly. But… how come it does not give you any results as such? You might have lots of visitors on your site but because you do not sell anything or not yet, it has not really delivered any sales for you.
What can you do to your website to generate leads and grow your mailing list?
An opt-in form in the header of your website is a really great idea to get people to sign up to and grow your mailing list. Because it is in the header of your website, it will be displayed on EVERY page of your website and will remind visitors to sign up to your mailing list repeatedly. Once they are on your mailing list, you can let them know regularly about the great services or products you offer and hopefully at some point they will like what they see and buy some of your stuff.
The best way to persuade people to sign up to and grow your mailing list is to give them something free in return. What exactly that is depends on your target audience, it could be a pdf cook book, a video or a mini course. You need to find out what your target audience is into, then create something that is of interest to them. They give you their email address, hence increase your mailing list, in return they get a taste of what you can offer. Fair deal, me thinks.
So far so good, all sounds very easy. But how does this actually work??

If you have a WordPress website, then use these steps to grow your mailing list with an opt-in form in the header.
First of all, you need to create the free file(s) that people will receive via email, once they have signed up to your mailing list. Make sure that the file is not too large in file size and that it is something your target audience can’t resist. When you have created this file, login to your Mailchimp account, click on ‘Lists’ in the top menu, select the list you want people to subscribe to, go to ‘Sign Up Forms’ and select ‘General Forms’. Click on the drop down menu underneath the heading ‘forms and response emails’ and select ‘Final welcome email’. Edit this email by uploading your free file and adding a link to it.
Then connect to your website via FTP (a good free programme to do this with is Filezilla). Locate the theme folder in the wp-content folder of your website and download it. Make sure you duplicate this folder, so that you have a backup of your theme files (this is VERY important! The best web developers have messed things up and have had to go back to their old files. So do it, just in case something goes wrong.). Call this folder ‘theme’-backup. Now look at the original theme folder you downloaded. There are a lot of files and folders in this folder, but the one that is of interest to us is the header.php file. We will need to open this file in a text editor and add the Mailchimp sign-up form to this file.
Login to your Mailchimp account, navigate to ‘Lists’, select the list you want people to subscribe to, go to Sign Up Forms and select ‘Embedded Forms’. On this page you will be able to create and design a sign up form and mail chimp will automatically create the html code for you to embed into your website. So once you have done that, grab the code and go to your header.php file.
Open your header file and find a place where to put the code of the sign up form. This is where you need some experience with code as it will look super confusing and there is a lot of code in this file. Obviously every theme is different, so there is no formula to where to put the code, but I would suggest to create a simple div container, either above or below the header image or navigation and put the form of the sign-up form in there. There are really helpful web browser add ons, which help you to see which bits on your website relate to which code. I use Firebug with Firefox, which is free but I am sure there are other add ons for other web browsers.
Upload your edited header.php file via FTP to your theme folder in the wp-content folder. View your website and ta-da you should have a sign up form in the header, on each page of your website. You will need to test that it works properly and make sure that the free file is delivered to your inbox.
Obviously it is important that your sign up form looks professional. If you are not happy with the styling of it and you have some knowledge of styling web elements with css, then download a ‘custom css’ plugin to style the different elements to your liking. You could add a nice background colour or pattern or even an image which illustrates your give-away. If your website is mobile responsive (and Google latest recommendation is that ALL websites should be), you will need to look at the css style sheet of your theme, find the section for the mobile responsive elements and add style options for your sign-up form.
